Secretary of State candidate Don Wagner challenges incumbent Shirley Weber to speak out against Gavin Newsom’s redistricting scheme

“Sitting silently on the sidelines while the politician who appointed you to your job attempts to undermine the will of the voters is not leadership, its collusion.”

Orange County, CA - - Today, County Supervisor and Secretary of State candidate Don Wagner (R-Orange County) challenged California Secretary of State Shirley Weber to speak out against Governor Gavin Newsom’s mid-decade redistricting scheme.

In 2010 California voters overwhelmingly adopted Proposition 20 to remove partisan politicians from the congressional redistricting process, turning redistricting over to the independent citizen’s commission. Voters passed Prop. 20 by a margin of 61.2 to 38.8 percent.

“Sitting silently on the sidelines while the politician who appointed you to your job attempts to undermine the will of the voters is not leadership, its collusion. Californians demand better from their top elections official,” said Wagner.

"Shirley Weber should be shouting from the rooftops, warning Californians that Gavin Newsom is trying to give their power away to his politicians. He wants to undermine the vote of the people for purely partisan purposes."

Supervisor Don Wagner is a former State Assembly Member, Irvine Mayor, College Board Trustee, and Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Wagner will bring a vast range of experience and a long list of accomplishments to the Secretary of State’s office.

“As Secretary of State, my office will stand with, and in support of the voters and will strive to uphold the laws and Constitution of our state and nation,” Wagner said.
